It’s bad enough that workers are forced to pay unions because their state law allows it but it’s even worse when the union fails to make the insurance premium payments for those workers because someone has stolen the money.
A Bakersfield woman is under investigation on allegations of embezzling more than $350,000 of insurance premiums from local members of the Service Employees International Union.
Brandi Marcella Madewell told Bakersfield Police detectives she took the money to pay Internet gambling debts, investigative documents indicate.
[snip] In late February Madewell was placed on administrative leave amid reports from vendors they were not being paid, SEIU spokeswoman Khanh T. Weinberg said.
The union notified the Bakersfield Police Department, which started an investigation.
Madewell apologized to union officials for the theft, according to documents filed by detectives with the Superior Court.
“I interviewed Madewell on two occasions and she admitted to the embezzlement,” Det. Jeff Watts also wrote in the report.
Apparently, the SEIU seems to have a chronic problem with losing things in California. Just two years ago, Andy Stern appointee and head of the SEIU’s largest local in California, Tyrone Freeman, was forced out due to his problems keeping members’ money for himself and his family.
The head of California’s largest union local has stepped aside in the wake of Times reports that the organization and a related charity paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to firms owned by his wife and mother-in-law.
Tyrone Freeman, president of a Service Employees International Union chapter in Los Angeles, said in a written statement late Wednesday that he was taking a leave of absence and that the local would be placed in a temporary trusteeship.
With people like this running the SEIU and the SEIU running the Democratic Party, it is little wonder Washington has problems holding on to our money.
2010 is America’s Thermopylae.
Remember.
November.
