New website targets pay inequities for African American members in NYC's construction unions

BWM-cookie-adA new website has been launched to cast a light on pay disparities between African Americans and their white counterparts in New York City’s construction unions.
BlackWorkersMatter.com is a project of the Center for Union Facts and was launched to “educate the public on the income inequality in the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York (BCTC),” according to CUF’s blog.

The message: In spite of construction union rhetoric on diversity, black union members make 20 percent less on average than their white counterparts.

The campaign launched with full-pages ads in City & State, the Amsterdam News and in the New York Post. We also sent a team to City Hall to hand out black and white cookies to demonstrate to city policymakers the uncomfortable truth about pay disparities in the city’s construction unions.

The website has copies of its print ads (below), radio ad (listen here) as well as cites these facts:

  • Black unionized construction workers in NYC make $5.74 less per hour on average than white unionized workers.
  • Multiple NYC construction unions are currently facing allegations of discrimination.
  • NYC construction union leadership is overwhelmingly male and white.
  • Construction is one of the least-diverse unionized sectors of the NYC economy.

  • This is incorrect. And you know it.
All trades have diffrent pay scale. And you know it.
plumbers, carpenters, laborers for example top out at a diffrent rate (pay scale).
Within these trade all 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th year apprentices and mechanics ( within there respectiv trades) make the same rate of pay as each other. And you know it.
1st year is the lowest pay grade and it increases, till you finally top out as a mechanic.
RACE, COLOR,CREED, RELIGION, SEX,AGE has no bearing on your pay scale. And you know this.
Everything is in our individual collective bargining agreement. And you know this.
Just know this “to the person reading and deleting my comment, bet you wished you joing a NYCBT Union”. have a good day.

    • You should write the parties responsible for the BlackWorkersMatter.com website with your concerns.
This post is just stating that it was launched.

  • I would like to report on this what is your source for this information? Also what unions are used in this statistic?

  • This is not true any union since I were working since 1987 pays each and every man the same wage the only ones that dont are the non union scum that take advantage of their men for more greedy corporate profit !

    • Does everyone (regardless of race) get the same amount of work?
Also, the following are from the BWM website:

      1. What percentage of higher-paid journeymen are non-white?
      2. How long does the average black union member spend in an apprenticeship compared to the average white union member?
