WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE: SEIU Plans To "Strike" Democrat Debate

The SEIU is, reportedly, going to “strike” (aka protest) for higher wages and end it with a demonstration outside the Democratic debate on Sunday, according to USA Today.

Fast-food workers fighting for a $15 an hour minimum wage plan to strike in Charleston, S.C., Sunday, capping the demonstration with a protest at the city’s Democratic presidential debate that evening.

The effort is part of a months-long campaign by the workers to muster their political might to influence the 2016 election. The workers, who are backed by the Service Employees International Union, plan similar protests at other Democratic and Republican debates this year.

Sunday, thousands of workers are expected to gather outside the Democratic face-off, including fast-food, home care, childcare and other low-paid workers. [Emphasis added.]

The SEIU’s planned protest poses several challenges for Democrats.

  1. For the candidates, the only one that has not endorsed a $15 minimum wage is the presumptive nominee, Hillary Clinton—who has stated that she prefers a $12 minimum wage.
  2. If the SEIU protests include picket lines, virtually all of the candidates, their fellow Democrat alumni, as well as the largely unionized press corps face the prospect of crossing a union picket line to enter the debate—which is sacrilege to Democrats.
  3. Lastly, the SEIU’s protest appears to be nothing more than a publicity stunt designed to embarrass their own party.

However, as the USA Today notes, the union will be handing out pledge cards (like the one below) to get people—presumably, the attendees—to commit supporting candidates who support the $15 minimum wage.
That would, as a result, put Clinton and her supporters in a tough spot.

Of course, before Sunday’s embarrassing fiasco unfolds, Democrat debate planners may negotiate a truce with the SEIU and have the “strike” called off.
However, until then, popcorn…
