Union Bosses Launch $50 Million "Dark Money" Campaign To Attack Trump In Battleground States

Union bosses, who are normally vocal critics of so-called “dark money” in politics, have been so alarmed at the popularity among rank-and-file members of Donald Trump they are planning to launch a $50 million Super Pac—with, irconically, dark money sources—to attack the presumptive GOP candidate.

Top labor unions are finalizing a new super PAC that will solicit cash from outside donors to take down Donald Trump in key battleground states.

The super PAC is engineered by top officials at the AFL-CIO and three major public employee unions: the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the American Federation of Teachers; and the National Education Association. The Service Employees International Union considered joining the PAC but has since opted out.
Unions may opt in for $1 million, sources say. The PAC’s organizers aim to raise about $50 million by soliciting money from unions and liberal donors outside the labor movement.

“The Citizens United ruling has opened the floodgates to massive spending by corporations and even more so by wealthy donors,” the AFL-CIO stated in 2012. “They are pouring money into our electoral system and threaten to drown out the voices of hard-working Americans.”

Ironically, now that a candidate (for better or worse) has come along who does not conform to the majority of union bosses’ endorsement of Hillary Clinton, the same unions that decry “wealthy donors” corrupting politics are using the very tools they criticize.
